Beautiful Milk was commissioned by my friend Anne Marie Cherry when we were in graduate school together at the University of Texas in 2010. I wanted to write something serene and beautiful in its simplicity and Anne Marie liked the combination of a solo wind instrument and percussion accompaniment that I used in Javier’s Dialog. I decided to incorporate only metallic instruments to create a sustained quality to the percussion instruments rather than dealing with the constant decay of the wooded percussion instruments. The title was given after the fact when I was pouring a glass of milk and it looked particularly beautiful in the light that day.
